John Steinbeck, an outsider

John Steinbeck could have made his the words of Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), the Danish philosopher and theologian: "I have felt the pain of not being like the others".

His character, his way of being, and his sense of independence made him an outsider since the early years of his youth. In his mature years, Steinbeck confronted a large segment of American society, which accused him of a provocative attitude, and even came to suspect that his sympathy for the underprivileged was inspired by an ideology that is close to Communism.

Two of the stories of The Long Valley, The Flight and The Chrysanthemums, are a demonstration of his empathy for the men who, in Spanish,  receive the name of "los de abajo", the lower ones.
